The Microbial Sciences group at AstraZeneca is studying the impact of the microbiome on the host immune response. We're constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for discovery and a pipeline to show for it. We're pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways through which the microbiome can be used across key therapeutic areas including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and infection and vaccines. Major responsibilities:

Conduct in vivo/in vitro experiments to assess the impact of the microbiome on mucosal immunology, systemic inflammation and therapeutic efficacy in models spanning chronic respiratory diseases.

Requirements/ Qualifications:

Scientist:
• Degree in immunology, microbiology, cell biology or related subject
• Relevant experience in industry (preferred) or academia
• M.S. with 2-5 years additional experience; B.S. with 5-8 years additional experience

Specific skills:

Experience working with animals is required and prior experience with the microbiome is highly desired. Exposure to respiratory disease models a plus. Broad experience required in immunologic assays (e.g. flow cytometry, nucleic acid purification, PCR, ELISA) and cell culture models of disease. Additional experience in higher level in vitro tissue models, confocal and fluorescent imaging and molecular biology would be a plus. The candidate must be dedicated to maintaining high laboratory standards with regard to safety and quality, and must possess good organization, record keeping and communication skills.

Job complexity:

Must be able to understand, conduct and interpret results of technically challenging experiments with minimum supervision, as part of a matrixed and collaborative team.

Supervision: Initial supervision and training by supervisor/team members, but independence expected in long term.
