The AstraZeneca Newark Supply Site was established in 1971 and currently employs approximately 260 people. Over the course of these years, Newark has undergone many product portfolio changes since it first began as Stuart Pharmaceuticals through today as the designated AZ North America Packaging Center of Excellence and a Flexible Formulation site for the global supply of complex products. This role will be filled as a Packaging or Sr. Packaging Engineer depending on the experience of the successful candidate.

What you will do:
  • Lead or support the following packaging projects and process improvement efforts: New Product Introductions (NPIs), product moves, product stability runs, cleaning validation, packaging component issue resolution, new equipment selection and installation, changeover reduction, OEE improvements, and equipment troubleshooting
  • Author and review validation and change control documents such as master plans, protocols, summary reports, and change requests in Operations Change Management.
  • Ensure projects are designed and installed in compliance with all company standards, SOP policies, and guidelines. All design and construction follows all Regulatory Agencies, Safety, Health, and Environmental codes and regulations
  • Delivery or development of project justification and engineering proposals including PEP, budget and spend management
  • Work collaboratively within PET and Engineering Community (local, regional, global)
  • Maintain external technical relationships and collaborates with equipment and material suppliers


Packaging Engineer

  • BS in Engineering, pharmacy, or related science

  • Training or experience in the applicable following technologies: aseptic/controlled environment, unit operations, formulation, packaging, validation, technology transfer, change control, applied statistics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, vacuum technology, electronics, programmable logic controllers
  • Proficiency in at least one of the following disciplines: equipment, process/materials, maintenance, project delivery
  • Equipment/System/Project/Process Life-Cycle Management and Execution including project management (schedule, sanction, spend, and stakeholders)
  • Organization, problem-solving, and decision-making
  • Teamwork and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project)

Packaging Senior Engineer

All experiences as the Packaging Engineer to include a requirement of five years' experience and three years of leadership and project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously balance multiple projects
  • Ability to work in a global environment to deliver standardization across the business
  • Knowledge of cGMPs and FDA policies/procedures including experience interacting with regulatory authorities
  • Ability to work effectively as a leader and /or member of a cross-functional team

  • Master's degree in an engineering or related scientific subject area
  • Black Belt Six Sigma certification and experience working in a lean environment, and/or working in a LEAN manufacturing environment. Experience in Six Sigma/ analytical troubleshooting skills
  • Mechanical/technical experience in more than one field
  • Management of multiple initiatives across a varied scope
  • Ability to develop team dynamics as well as personnel
  • Ability to work with all levels within the organization - locally and globally
